Eggs

They used to say that consuming too many eggs is bad for your health and raises cholesterol. While eggs do contain dietary cholesterol, it has little effect on blood cholesterol levels.  It is the saturated and trans fat that have a bigger impact.

One egg contains:

  • 75 calories
  • 5 grams of fat
  • 6 grams of protein
  • 0 carbohydrates
  • 67 milligrams of potassium
  • 70 milligrams of sodium
  • 210 milligrams of cholesterol

Eggs are also a great source of vitamins A, D and B12, as well as choline, a nutrient essential in many metabolic steps.  Most of the nutrients are in the yoke, while the egg white is mostly protein.

For healthy adults, eating up to one egg per day is generally considered safe and does not increase heart disease risk.  Some studies suggest that eggs may have beneficial effects on HDL (good) cholesterol.
